History of Tanjong Katong

Tanjong Katong came from the word “turtle point” in Malay, in which Katong was originally a type of sea turtle that is now extinct, and it also has the meaning of “the rippling effect of a sea mirage” when looking at a shoreline.

Back in the days of 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles identified Tanjong Katong as the eastern boundary of the British settlement, being one of the early landmarks in Singapore. Before the land reclamation that happened in Marine Parade, Tanjong Katong was known for its boathouses and beachside retreats while facing the seas.

The rich individuals built hotels, mansions, and recreation clubs along the beach and treat it as their version of the Riviera, spent their weekends over there as small vacation, thus Tanjong Katong was also known as a health resort with its laid-back lifestyle.

Inheriting the deep history of the past heritage, with the touch of modern concept and rejuvenation to the building’s facade, Tanjong Katong now is not just a rich heritage neighborhood but also known as the most “instagrammable” (a.k.a photo-worthy) neighborhood and food heaven.
Due to its Peranakan history, Tanjong Katong consists of lots of the photo-worthy architecture, such as Red House at Katong, Pastel shophouses at Koon Seng Road and Terrace houses at 150 East Coast Road.
Katong Antique House, opened by resident/owner Mr. Peter Wee, is a two-storey fully-restored shophouse that has been decorated in full traditional Peranakan splendor, providing detailed information about the Peranakan culture.
